Best meal in Ubud Bali- Naughty Nuri’s
Naughty Nuri’s in Bali’s cultural centre Ubud was a regular suggestion I received when I asked where the best food was in Ubud. The food here is not traditional Balinese food by any stretch, but the tasty BBQ offerings make up for that. Without a doubt this was the best meal that I ate during my brief stay in Ubud, and one that I would consider unmissable for any visitor.
With Bali being the first stop of my South East Asia adventure (check out my plans here!) I was keen to start checking out the local haunts for fabulous food. Naughty Nuri’s had been on my original list of places to try, and when we mentioned this to a member of staff at the hotel he began to rave about how much he loved the food and goes there all the time. I knew we had chosen the right place! Both locals and tourists alike come to Naughty Nuri’s for one specific dish, the BBQ spare ribs.
The smell of these delicious smokey meat catches you as you approach the restaurant drawing you in – they smell too good to walk past! Cooked at the front of the restaurant over hot charcoal, the BBQ meats give the place the smell of succulent sweet meat as well as a smokey atmosphere.
The menu offers an abundance selection of BBQ meats, but we decided to see what all the fuss was about. We ordering a plate of the spare ribs, some fresh vegetables and a serve of nasi goreng. Boy we were in for a treat!
The vegetables arrived to the table first, and looked… well…plain. Steamed veggies aren’t the most visually attractive meal I’ll admit, but when you began to eat them it didn’t take long to realise that they have been steamed in a lime juice and garlic broth that added incredible flavour to what is a very simple dish.
Next to arrive were the beef ribs. In hindsight I wish we’d ordered multiple plates of them and nothing else. They were THAT good!
The meat itself was fall apart tender and just slid off the bone with minimal effort. The winning factor however was the sauce. The sticky brown sweet BBQ sauce was to die for! Rich, thick and utterly delicious. The ribs were coated generously in the sauces whilst on the grill and then again before service, so when they reached the table were glistening with saucy goodness. The best way to enjoy these was to grab a hold of a bone and go for it. The result was sticky sauce covered fingers – this was true finger-licking-good food!!!
We devoured the whole plate within minutes, and strongly considered ordering another plate or two! But sadly decided to wait til after the nasi goreng which we had already ordered.
Take my advice, only order the meat and plenty of it.
The nasi goreng arrived during our meat session and was admittedly left until last. The ribs were too ridiculously good to ignore! The nasi goreng was a generous serve of fried rice with grilled chicken and vegetables, topped with a fried egg. The rice was fragrant with a touch of spice. Served with a wedge of lime, a squirt of the citrus lifted the dish. It was fresh and a brilliant accompaniment to the ribs.
Naughty Nuri’s is not only renewed for their BBQ meats but also for their potent martini cocktails. Their motto– one, two, three, floor! I ordered a cocktail named Joey’s cosmo, expecting a Sex in the City styled cosmopolitan in a fabulous martini glass. What arrived to the table was an extreme version of that- an entire large tumbler of cosmo! It was one, floor for me! The cocktail was well balanced with the right amount of lime juice to pulpy cranberry juice.
This meal was one of the best eats that I had in Ubud. Potentially the best thing I have eaten this year. I now understand why so many people suggest eating at Naughty Nuri’s, and will join that tribe. If you head to Ubud, Bali this is one meal that you CANNOT miss. I’m already planning my next trip back!
Have you been to Naughty Nuri’s in Bali? Do you enjoy eating amazing ribs? Where is the best place to eat them? Would LOVE to hear from you!
