Why not branch out and dream of an oasis in Thailand? I started this blog with the intention of writing about travel in general, not just about Japan. Although I could write about Japan endlessly I figured now was the time to branch out.
Koh Samui in Thailand is one of my favourite beach getaways and I’d love to suggest the Akaryn Resort & Spa. After months of research of the best place to stay I settled on this hotel, and was mighty glad that I did. I travelled there with a boyfriend (unfortunately now former) and found it the perfect romanic getaway.
We stayed in a Pool Suite here for 6 glorious days. We wanted somewhere quiet to relax and re-cooperate after a hectic few months. AKARYN provided everything we needed for that to happen. Where to start?
The hotel is located in Choeng mon on North East part of Koh Samui Island. It is only a convenient 5min drive to the airport. The hotel features it’s own private beach looking out over Hanuman Bay. It is very private and secluded, however the hotel has daily shuttle services to Chaweng and is close to a main road to use tuktuks if you get cabin fever.
The suites were spacious with giant King size four poster beds, although slightly harder than normal- but still heavenly. The bathrooms featured the largest shower I’ve ever seen, a closed off toilet, and a basin top filled indulgent spa products. The outdoor area included a day bed and a private pool/jacuzzi, meaning we did not need to venture far to cool off.
The hotel is beautifully designed to include the local nature, however the bushes are still growing and do not currently provide enough cover for the suites it to be totally private.
The hotel was very clean, with rooms being serviced twice a day and a pool cleaner came along too.
The beach is rocky meaning that it was difficult to swim. However a private beach was a huge plus, as often we had the whole beach to ourselves. The main hotel pool is perfectly designed in the surroundings, so that you can swim up to the poolside cocktail bar, relax in the spa, and look out of the beach. Perfection!
Food- delicious and fresh. I loved the breakfasts served on the beach. The selection of breakfast items (cold meats, fruits and pastries) placed on the individuals table was a great idea and would save on waste. You could then pick two items from the menu to be freshly cooked. The banana pancakes were a particular favourite! Cocktails at the wet bar during the nightly happy hour (2 for 1 prices) We did a private cooking class so we had some great skills to bring home with us.
The hotel features an impressive spa with a wide range of options. However I must suggest the spa buffet where you can enjoy multiple treatments including scrubs, massages and facials. Two and a half hours of heaven!
The hotel will happily organise a rental car for you, or you can hire a motorbike from the milkbar/tour store 20metres from the entrance. Rental on a bike is 250baht per day. You can also buy drinks and alcohol there, as the mini bar prices were extreme.
I would highly recommend this resort to anyone wishing for an indulgent quiet escape. I loved every minute and can’t wait to go back.
Update: This property has recently changed hands and is now run as Outrigger Koh Samui. I have no doubt that the standard set by Akaryn will continue and that this stunning resort will remain a hidden treasure in Koh Samui.
